Gia & I Became Engaged on Christmas Morning

Just after sunrise on Christmas Day, Gia and I were engaged to be married at Pietra Santa Winery in the Cienega Valley of Hollister, the town we both grew up in. This is also the location of where my Mother was born in a vineyard shack.

Here's the back story:
We knew of each other since grammar school at Sacred Heart. Gia is one class ahead of me, the acquaintance was minor.
Our parents know each other and her sister Carla and my sister Anita ("guns") were friends in childhood.
We went to high school together and ran in separate circles.
Fast forward 25 years and both living in San Francisco, me for a long while and still single, and her after several years living in Rome and San Jose.
Gia and I ran into each other at a several film festivals in SF and became email buddies and later hung out as friends. I patiently pursued the relationship further for the next 6 months.
Finally she started seeing little "Ricky" from Hollister in a different light.
We've been together ever since, 4 years this week.
Through ups and downs in a growing relationship I knew deep in my heart she would one day be my wife.

The engagement:
On Christmas Eve day I went to the Borelli's, her parents house (which is 6 blocks from my family) to say hello, and her Dad recruited me to help prepare the dining table leaves and chairs. I cornered him in a back room, and asked for permission to marry his youngest daughter. He agreed and had some nice things to say and about my family and about our relationship.
When Gia arrived later that evening we had cioppino at the Borelli's with her larger extended family. We opened white elephant gifts (above the neck) and judged the 3rd annual dessert bake-off. Later we joined my family for our 44th annual Christmas "play" where I sang a song from Sweeney Todd (a customized version of "Johanna" (Gia)) to her great embarrassment in front of about 40 of my family members.
We went to bed late and I mentioned to Gia I wanted to wake up early.
I prepared coffee the night before.
At sunrise I woke her up and she reluctantly but quickly agreed to go with me, to my surprise, for a mysterious early morning drive. I put the coffee in a large thermos and hid a coffee cup and some breakfast snacks in a small backpack.
She went to the car before me and warmed it up, but the windows were icy. I hosed 'em down, alarming her with the spray. Poor girl was chilly, half asleep and wondering where the heck we were going.
We drove half way out to the country when I realized I had left the coffee thermos on the counter. I also wasn't able to play the "love mix" I painstakingly prepared on the iPod due to technical difficulties. However, I plowed ahead.
We arrived at the location I chose, with the help of my niece Nicky 2 days earlier, just outside of the winery where we'd setup an iron table and chairs overlooking the hills and vineyards.
I offered Gia biscotti and fruit but she wasn't exactly feeling hungry at 7:30am especially with no coffee to wash it down.
Then I pushed the backpack to her and asked her to dig in for anything else she may want. She was still clueless until this moment when she found the cup and attached was a diamond ring jingling from the handle. She cried, then I went to a knee, asked her THE question and told her I had her father's permission. She said "YES!" and we proceeded to laugh for several minutes. It sort of felt kind like a final episode of "The Bachelor" I suppose.
Soon we went back to the warm car and I turned the radio on where ironically the wedding march "Pachelbel's Canon" was playing. It was a perfect follow-up to the proposal. We immediately told her family, then my large family where we woke up several of my many sisters at Ridgemark where they were staying. We shared the unused coffee and some honey donuts her Mom made and gave hints until they figured it out. It was really sweet and emotional. Several of my sister started following us with cameras in tow like paparazzi as we headed to my Dad's house.
We told more folks as the day went on including Gia's cousins and Aunts and my Aunt Marian who was most pleased.
Gia returned to SF that same night since she had to work the next day.
Plans are immediately in the works for a wedding date and location, and will be announced sometime next year.

Thanks to everyone for the support and well wishes and we'll keep you informed right here.

Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year!

Name Those Colors?

The first person to guess the latest 3 colors of the "girls room" in order wins a special prize at Christmas. Two of the colors are still present in the room. The third latest, you'd have to be old enough to remember or dig deep (as I did recently).

5 Years After David's Death

5 years after David’s death

Today I was looking through old journals and found a letter Altie wrote to his father, at Christmas, a month after David died. It was so powerful and heartbreaking I started to cry. I wanted to keep reading but I could no longer see the words through my tears so I had to stop.

It will have been 5 years this coming weekend since David died. Five years of his presence being felt in so many situations, guiding so many who loved him, through troubles and triumphs. We feel sad that he misses life events, especially the birth of Altie and Rachelle’s new sons, Amari and Elijah and Terrica’s baby Leila. But he will live forever in our hearts.

Peggy and Altie have gathered up the pieces of their shattered lives from that horrid day in November when David was cruelly snatched away from them. Courageously they fought the pain and have taken back their lives in a solid, purposeful and even serene way. They have become role models for the rest of us in how to cope with loss. I often hear Peggy comment when good things happen, “I feel blessed”. I know she enjoys the sounds of grandchildren filling her home with warmth.

On this fifth anniversary, I honor David by sending my love to all those he touched in life, especially my Peggy and her growing family--Altie, Rachelle and the three boys; and the Marylands--Terrica, Rob, Ariana, and Leila. His logo has become a heart with wings. I see the wings of David’s heart hovering over in a protective way making sure God watches over you all.

Thinking of you with love on this anniversary,
Susy

Stories from the firestorms of October, 2007

360 DEGREE VIEW

MONDAY DUSK:

Not supposed to leave the house due to bad air from fires and smoke.

Stir crazy forced to listen constantly to radio fire news, to see if we need to evacuate.

Had to get out.

Walking the dogs, we cross the street and climb a hill with a 360 degree view of the skies.

Eastern sky so bright blue it thinks it’s a normal day,

Juxtaposed to a southeastern puffy dark thick grey cloud rising boldly from the Escondido fires.

I feel scared it might be near my sister who’d gotten the “prepare to evacuate” notice.

Turning left the northern sky curls then thins the grey clouds into long strips that look like city smog.

Turning west toward the ocean the orange sun can’t break through hazy filters of brown and rust.

Looking south beyond our house toward the lake, the sky is brown where a fire was recently contained.

A Somber Sight.
A Variegated Sky.

MONDAY EVENING:

Once the two fires closest to us were contained, I no longer had to listen intently to live fire coverage. Relieved from constant vigilance, I felt compelled to use my energy to help others.

Drove to a nearby evacuation center.

Given a bright yellow, “How May I Serve You?” volunteer button, I do art with kids then wander over to a huge room where people are clustered in groups on the floor preparing to spend the night. I walk around visiting with people, help set up cots, and hand out pillows and blankets while standing in the center with a 360 degree view of the room.

Doors on the east wall open as new evacuees enter looking haggard and a little lost, towing young kids clutching pillows for security.

Scanning north a Mexican family of six sit together on the floor, look at me shyly and I smile warmly.

Northwest, a young couple at a table angry and worried about their parents, who were here, but went back to the evacuated house to get their sister’s car.

The west wall houses a stage and giant television showing wildfire coverage that most people watch.

In front of me toward the west at a table is a big blond mother of four. At lights out the mother calmly but firmly says, “Lie down right now” to her pouting 8 year old who doesn’t want to sleep on the floor.

Southwest, a woman helps her 90 year old mother take insulin. One toddler in blue pajamas racing around the entire room swipes an apple off the backpack of a 70 year old woman obliviously staring at the news from a lounge chair.

On the south wall a young couple asleep in each other’s arms with no bedding but a jacket under his head.

On the east wall three Asian teenage sisters share one big blow up mattress, and an older Asian man, formally dressed, bows graciously to me.

We set up a cot for the 90 year old woman who tells me with bright eyes, “This is the second time I evacuated. As a child I was evacuated from a flood, now from this fire. I guess I’ve come full circle.” I want to tuck her in like we used to do Mom but just smile instead. Then they turn out the lights and I feel sad to leave.

A somber room.
A variegated sight.

The Fires: Escondido

See the lady with the white hair. I was driving pass an evacuation center on Tues. a.m. to selfishly see if my bank was open, they were closed on Monday. Somehow I saw her little dog that looked like Toto and she was talking to a volunteer in an Orange Vest. I asked if she was Ok, and she kept saying that she left her purse in her home because she had to evacuate so fast. She asked the guy to go retrieve it. I would say she was 10 miles away from home. I told her I was going to run an errand but I would be back to see if she was Ok. 20 min. later I came back with my 8 year old. She was fiddling in her car with her dog, so I wanted her out of the smoke, even though Escondido wasn't that smokey, it was HOT! We sat in the "Christian High School" evacuation center around the corner from my house for about an hour, when the volunteer came back and said, "sorry they won't let me in." I could tell she was worried. She got separated from her neighbors and was just alone. My 13 year old joined us and finally I asked, don't you want to come to my house with the air conditioning and I have little dogs and lots of kids running around. She agreed! I had my 13 year old drive with her...yes she still drives at 86 years old. She ended up staying with us for 3 days, 2 nights and what a blessing she was to have. I guess I could've picked up some "crazy old lady" but something (someone) brought me to her!!! She told my 8 year old that she could be her adopted granddaughter and without her knowing, I cried. Come to find out she is a military wife, her husband passed away 6 years ago and her children are all out of state. She told me she was catholic and her children went to Catholic School. I talked to her 58 year old daughter in upstate New York, and she was grateful. I told her I couldn't imagine my mom or dad being in this situation and although the evacuation centers do all that they could, it isn't like sleeping in a HOME. A day later my husband drove his motorcycle to her home, watered it down and then my daughter grabbed her purse for her. They locked the doors behind them and brought her purse to her. She left at 7 am this morning and I cried. I think we will be seeing her again. NEEDLESS TO SAY: My mom intervened on this situation and I feel her presence wherever I go.

1977 RickyNiniAltie

RickyNiniAltie - 1977

I love this picture for so many reasons. We are obvously mauling each other and having fun in the girls room. Nini was 14, I was 12 and Altie 7. Notice the red lamps that don't match teh checkered bed spreads, limited wall hangings, Nini's greasy hair, Altie's little afro, my very '70's clothes, which are back in certain circles. We had so much fun playing with each other and jumping on those series of beds. Who recalls the order of the girls' beds? (Anita, Maria, Cefe, Josefa?). I know Joey's was closest to the upstairs and also the firmest.

Before long Amari and Alana will be the same ages as their parents were here.

10 sibs, 10 days: Wrap-Up

Finished my sibling tour of California on Saturday night. What a trip it was.

Travelled about 1300 miles, slept over 8 nights, saw 9 siblings (didn't catch up with Sean yet, ironically, even though we live in the same town), 6 out-laws, 10 nephews/nieces, 5 great nephews/nieces and Dad.

Overall I fell thankful for a safe trip, one with little drama and much visiting including lots of listening and sharing. It was a very positive experience and I am rejuvinated to be back home. I billed this as 10 sibs and it was so much more - including seeing all the extended family and some friends along the way. I feel blessed, lucky and unique. Who else can say they have family all up and down California and lay claim to such an adventure. Someone asked me what the impetuous for this was and I didn't have the chance to respond. This came about when I got to thinking what kind of vacation I wanted to have, while Gia needed to work, that wouldn't cost too much and would include people that I love. It was all that and more.

Great moments included but weren't limited to the following:
Cozy Cup with Dad
Watching the sunset in Tujunga
Dinner out with Bonny and John
Playing with Jade
Distributing wine, beer, dried 'cots and artichokes (while they lasted)
Having lunch with Alana at her school
Hanging with Anita in the middle of the "work" day
Movie Night! at the Horton's
When Susy's student said, "Are you the 10 sibs, 10 days brother?"
Late night cafe drinks with Steve and Susy
Chai lattes with Steve near the beach
Laughing with Susy over the way Thich Naht Hahn drank his water (mindfully)
Travelling on a beautiful dirt road near Panoche to Hollister
Catching a glimpse of Kenny riding his new bike to the cannery in the early morning
Walking around and having lunch in San Juan with Dad and Joey
Joking around with tall Johan
Fixing the remote control in Hollister
Shooting hoops with Altie
Seeing Altie and Rachelle do well at co-parenting
Watching, for the first time, as Elijah opened his blue eyes
Listening to Amari call me "Uncky" and say "I wuv you"
Sharing stories and eating lunch with Peggy at the mall
Ham dinner with all the Sacto gang (including Terrica, Ariana, Laila)
Finding out about Rivianna being cast in 3 plays
Watching Carson play soccer
Videotaping Maria yelling "Go Dragon Fire!"
Hearing Cefe jiggle over breakfast
Slipping Quinlan a 5-spot
Hitting golf balls with Kevin
Coming home to Gia

Thank you to everyone for being so gracious with your homes, for cooking, sharing your lives and for all your love. I LOVE YOU! Now come visit me (I have free Jazz tickets).

Look for a new multiple choice questionnaire based on this trip coming soon to a blog near you.

10 sibs, 10 days: Homeward Bound

Still in Sacramento this Saturday morning. Heading toward home later tonight, will stop off in San Rafael and possibly Mill Valley to catch the Film Festival.

Hung with Amari all Saturday morning, he calls me Uncy. So easy-going and adorable, I think I finally used up all the digital camera's space. Rochelle came over with the baby, "little bootie" and I got to meeet Elijah for the first time. Promptly blessed his big head and kissed him. He was sleeping the whole time.

Later Peggy and I went shopping in downtown and I got two pairs of jeans (2nd one was cheaper). We had latte's and later ate a snack and beer samples. It was great to get out for some quality Peggy-time. She kidded me that we weren't done talking about her.

Saturday night we had a big ham dinner here at 1633. Attending were: Peggy, Altie, Me, Cefe, Rivianna, Quinlan, Maria, Dave, Carson, Terrica, Ariana, Laila, Rochelle, Amari and Elijah. The babies slept alot. We cooked, ate, yapped and scored the 36 Orderly Questions from Cefe. Will publish answers and winners soon. Great time here, and sad to leave.

Heading to see Carson's soccer game now, and pick up Quinlan on the way.

Looking forward to being home and seeing Gia late tonight. Although Kevin's been calling to keep me in the Rafael for Sunday, we'll see.

I'll be posting a wrap up message, photos and a multiple choice "travelling trivia" contest soon.

10 sibs, 10 days: Hollister-Sacramento

Before today, 5 down, 5 to go. Now in Sacramento and having spent the evening here with Peggy only 4 await. I wonder if Kevin and Sean will be available.

Had a great day today with Dad and Josefa. We went to replace the remote control (finally) at the Gilroy store and then proceeded to quiet San Jaun Bautista for a german lunch. It was terrific and we enjoyed weiners, sauerkraut and beer on tap. We walked around main street and the Mission nearly 50 years to the day when Vertigo, which was film in part there, was released. After some refection we realized Josefa who was born that year may not have been in tow with Dad, Mom, Kenny and the Twins since filming was likely the year before. When I asked Dad if he wanted to go see Jimmy Stewart, he said, "no, but I'd like to see Kim Novak, she's still younger than me." The story goes that when they were here in '57 Dad went up to Stewart chatted about them both having sets of twins and asked for an autograph. Stewart double checked the back to make sure he wasn't signing a check and was gracious. Novak was more private and sat seperately. Joey and I agreed it was time to revisit the Hitchcock classic. SJB was having several film related events this weekend and we were there before all the action in the sleepy tourist town.

Later we visited the St. Francis Retreat Center and had fond memories of the retreats and events we'd attended. There was a priest retreat going on and we witnessed the grounds post '06 fire, a first for me. Did some gift shop buying and headed home. I took several pictures and some video clips I'll share later.

Nice to be in Sac. and hang with Peggy, Altie and Amari tonight and just watch TV which I haven't done much of this week. Amari is adorable and very loving. Tomorrow Peggy has dinner plans for the entire family here and I look forward to seeing everyone including Elijah for the first time.

10 sibs, 10 days, 10 friends

Writing from Hollister, at Pat's house. Arrived from San Diego via I-5 and Panoche Road. This small road has 11 or 12 miles of dirt but is beautiful. I will add pictures later, and also have some small video clips to show you all. Started off day with Susy making me one of her specialty scrambled in the pan eggs. Rayna called just before I left and said, "I'm more addicted to your blog then my reality TV shows." Susy and I got a good laugh out of that one. I drove like hell and arrived in Hollister in time for dinner with the Sniders, Dad and Kenny.

Now just hanging out and heading to Sacramento tomorrow. Will update from there, and looking forward to meeting Elijah for the first time.

Peace!

10 sibs, 10 days: USD

On the campus of Univ. of San Diego, the beautiful Catholic one on the hill. With Steve and Susy, just finished the talk by Thich Naht Hahn. It was a wonderful speech, one lesson we all appreciated was about holding your anger and fear close to your heart like a woman would hold her child. He also spoke about how psychotherapists can only deeply listen when they have compassion for their own suffering, which was fitting for Susy.

Now were in living in the moment, as the great "Thay" (teacher) preached, so we're enjoying hot drinks in the campus cafe full of students at 10pm while composing this.

Started my day at Nini's and had lunch with Alana at her school. It was quite different than the experiences that I'm used to living in my SF-Haight Ashbury-Adult-Gia-BMW (bike, Muni, walk - as Steve just said - see still in the moment).

Spent some time at the beach, alone, napping, reading, swimming the cold Pacific before having dinner at Schroeters of salmon and zucchini salad.

I felt a little like I knew people when after the lecture we ran into a student of Susy's who asked if I was the famous "10 sibs" brother. She got this information when Susy told my story about visiting 10 sibs in 10 days during her lecture on stress-hardiness yesterday.

10 sibs, 10 days: Movie Night

From Escondido, this Monday evening following movie night which I hope will be a new tradition at the Horton's. We watched an inspirational movie in a tent on a large screen with couches and all. Great time! I instantly thought of how Rivianna would like this. Will have to come back again for a 1st of the month, or 1st Friday?

Picked up Alana at school today, with Nini. She's so darling, in SECOND grade, and full of ideas. We listened to hip-hop music in the car. Later went clothes shopping at Nordstrom Rack and the health food store.

Got to see Nicki and Samara and hang with them outside where the weather is perfect here. We BBQ'd but Anita and I got distracted and I got blamed for burning the seasoned carne asada. What's new?

Regardless, I'm having such a good time here in SD that I just decided to stay an extra day in order to hang with the fambam and go to a lecture from Thich Nat Han with Steve and Susay on Tue evening. I'll make up for it by driving straight to Hollister on Wed morning.

10 sibs, 10 days: San Diego

I can't believe it's already Day 5.

Writing from Steve's office in Carsbad, and waiting for Nini to pick me up to meet up with Susy for lunch where she is working a long day with a few breaks in between. Steve and I just got back from his gym, Frogs, which where we had a nice workout. Put it this way: this gym is so San Diego it has a beach volleyball court outside that is part of the gym. Afterwards we had chai latte's and quiche at some hot spot in Leucida. Good Times!

I got in to the Schroeters around 10pm last night and we chatted until midnight. Snoozy had to work early today and late into tonight. Apparently she is front-loaded during the week on sessions, etc. Sounds like a good schedule to me if you can get the occassional 5 day weekend.

OK, Nini finally arrived and off we go!

Still in Tujunga: Day 4

Bonny and John took me to a great Mexican restaurant last night, La Camanita (not Las Camanitas). It was the most amazing non-spicy style from Mexico City where I had a combination of mole enchilada and chile relleno. We also enjoyed margaritas and daquaris.

Today Bonny cooked breakfast at home and we quickly planned dinner at that time. Reminding me how David used to say us Warren's plan our next meal while we're still in the middle of this one.

I spent the afternoon in Hollywood at the new ArcLight Cinema's where there is an independant film art house ($14-Oh My God!). There I saw "Into the Wild" which is Sean Penn's new film. Long but worthwhile in this state of the art cinema.

Now they're waiting for me to eat dinner. I've been playing with fun Jade who is growing up fast and speaks up a storm in two languages. She's cute as a button. See photo below.

Next stop: San Diego tonight

10 days, 10 siblings: Day 3

Day 3, but kinda feels like Day 1.

I'm writing from Brian's computer, but he's actually not here....off camping with his family including Brendon. Hope to see him and all "growd" up Jade and Santa on Sunday afternoon. Just arrived and going out to dinner with Bonny and John soon. Tomorrow before meeting up with Brian I will likely go to this state of the art cinema place called ArcLight Hollywood.

I'm actually off to an auspicious (is that the right word, certainly Susy will correct me) start. I was supposed to see Kevin on Thursday, but he had to work while I was there to pick up his car. I did get to see Sally briefly, so I'm going to count that, I know she wants me to...LOL. Gia and I were in Napa that day (I playing hookie) and she shopping, we also went wine tasting at one place and had this amazing steak dinner, far far away from where we started, but that's another story all-together.

After work on Friday, headed to Los Gatos for dinner with Jim Arballo and a few friends. I was going to attend a play of a mutual friend, but I begged out to get to Hollister earlier than later. Did see Kenny briefly before he had to get to bed. I didn't realize he was already done with the house arrest thing. Now just on probation. We had a laugh and then chatted with Dad about the Vegas trip. Sounds like it was a great time. Thanks to Peggy and Anita. Dad says Peggy's place is great, and that Anita is well connected. I love the stories of getting moved around from the green room, private box?, and front row seats. I think I'd enjoy hearing Tom Jones sometime; but it's never been on my radar. Oh and the 1/2 price Rat Pack tickets, nice job Nini. Peggy, were you just going along for the ride or what? Valet parking, sounds nice.

Today started with a trip to Compassion Pregnancy for some copying (more on that when I see you in person) and some Google mapping. I'm all setup now, thanks to Dad's connections, even if different than Nini's...LOL. Dad and I had a nice breakfast at Cozy Cafe and he walked home from there. Wow! He can walk for a man of advance age...better than me probably. Drove the I-5 all day and looking forward to the real visits starting.

Stay tuned!

Warren Generation Quiz Answers

From Susy:
I have just tallied the scores and have the results of the Warren
Generation Quiz! Here are the answers and some comments:

1. Whatever happened to Gammy’s piano?
Hortons house, and Uncle Johnny tells them he is glad it ended up
where it will be well loved and often played by that musical family.

2. Which (gen. B) families have pianos in their home?
Hortons, Schroeters, and less known by many, Sniders. Did you know Doug plays beautifully? Some said Peter had a piano, but I asked and they said "No".

3. Name the members of the gen. B grandparents club.
Peg, Bon, Sue, Anita

4. Which of those grandparents has the most grandkids?
Accepting both Bonny or Peggy as correct.

5. Name all the kids in D generation.
Ariana and Leila; Bonny and John's grandkids (jake, Kirby, Riley, Brett) and Jade; Amari and Elijah Ford; Hayden and Collin

6. Who is the only gen. D baby with blue eyes?
Hayden

7. Name the 4 gen. C cousins all born in 1992.
Chelsea, Johan, Samara, and Rivianna (those cousins need a nickname, what should it be kids, the "ninety-twoers"?)

8. Name the 3 cousins all born in 1999. (Caution: one is actually gen. D and the other 2 are gen. C).
Ariana, Carson, Alana

9. Name each of the Warren "Mambo Kings" (from the past--gen. B).
This stumped many people. In fact only Ricky got it correct. It
refers to nicknames SEAN and KEVIN made up for themselves on a
camping trip.

10. Who in gen A takes a walk every night after dinner, and might visit a neighbor or two on the way, and take you along if you wish?
Wes, Dad, or Grandpa.

11. Name 2 Gen. C's that love to cook gourmet meals?
Brian, Shahera or Rayna. Some said Claire. Yes, she is a gourmet cook, but she is Gen. B, not Gen. C. Also Rivi, since both she and Shusti say so.

12. What was Ken's theme song from the P.O.F. movie?
Ken's theme song from P.O.F. plays while he rides a scooter. It is the theme from Rocky, "Eye of the Tiger", picked by David Horton. But I liked Joey's guess, "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

13. Name at least three kinds of pies Gammy made every Thanksgiving.
People seem to have different memories of those Gammy pies. Originally I had pumpkin, pecan and rhubarb. I do not remember any
apple, but people remember it as well as mincemeat, so I gave everyone credit, even lemon meringue, which was Grandma Ramona's favorite.

14. Who took a call at work once from then Vice-President, Al Gore?
Peggy took a call from Al Gore when her boss, who was VP of Caltrans got a call from him. I was on the phone with her at the time. She said,"The Vice President is on the other line." "Of the United States?", I asked. "Yes". I let her go. (That is my favorite excuse I have ever received from someone trying to end our call!)

15. Who in Gen. B does the best Al Gore impression?
Peter. Someone said Rick and I gave them credit because perhaps they like his impression better.

16. Who in Gen. D loves turtles?
Jade loves turtles. Sea turtles are big in Hawaii, folks.

17. What nickname did Mom's best friend, Marty, call Mom?
Marty called Mom, "Bucharest". They were studying geography in school and somehow the names stuck. Cefe says Mom called Marty, "Romania"(same class).

18. What is Steve's middle name?
STEVE'S MIDDLE NAME! I had no idea this would be such a stumper! We have gotten the biggest laughs from the answers: Marvin (his
Dad's name), Robert (his brother's name), Walt (his Uncle's name),
Scott (his cousin's name) and Allen (as in Steve Allen?). A few
ingenious people tried to google Steve to discover he only uses his
middle initial, C. so we got quite a few "Charles" as guesses but the
biggest laugh came via email to Steve from a desperate contestant. It said simply, "Cheat time. What's your middle name? Help a Sistah out!" To be fair this sistah had already sent in her answers so it was all in fun, and we got a big kick out of it. Only one person got this answer correct: the only child of STEPHEN CRAIG SCHROETER!!!

19. Name the Gen. B's who were named after a Saint because their birthday fell on that Saints feast-day (first or middle name counts)?
This was the other difficult one for many who got it partially but not fully correct. Hint: Check Catholic calendars with Gen. B family birthdates and you will find complete answers. Congratulations to Maria, who is the only one who got it completely correct, and included exact names and dates. The answers are: me (St. Vincent Ferrar 4/5); Maria de Lourdes (Our Lady of Lourdes 2/11); Josefa (St. Joseph 3/19); Kevin Joseph (St. Joseph the Worker 5/1); Peter James (St. James 7/25). Mom consulted the calendar to help her come up with names, because she had so many to name!

20. What neighbor of a Gen. A and B is currently building an authentic pizza oven in his backyard?
Neighbor building a pizza oven. I was hoping pizza would be the hint that he is Italian. Josefa and I were walking around the block
with Dad in July when Alessio invited us into his backyard and showed us the big outdoor oven being built. Most guessed correctly on this one.

21. Who in Gen. C just got caught up in the Harry Potter craze and is currently reading all the books, one after the other?
Finally, the Gen. C who JUST recently got caught up in the Harry Potter craze is Geoff. Little bit of a trick, as he is the spouse of
a Gen. C. I had to carry an extra suitcase to Missouri recently,
filled with the 5 previous hardbacks, and i think he is already on
book 6!

NOW TO THE WINNERS: I had to divide the score into # wrong and # partially wrong or incomplete. (If you had some saint names but not all, for example):

Winner: The GOLD goes to CEFE, with one wrong, and 4 incomplete answers.

Second: The SILVER goes to Josefa with 2 wrong and 2 incomplete answers.

Third: The BRONZE goes to Rivianna with 2 wrong and 3 incomplete.

Fourth: Tying HONORABLE MENTION are Rayna and Anita each with 3
wrong and 3 incomplete.

It would be impressive if I put this much time into my own work, but this is more fun. -Susy

Next up - The winner, Cefe, will present her own trivia as is becoming tradition.
